DNA Testing for Visa and Citizenship Applications: UK, US, Canada and Australia Guide

DNA Testing for Visa and Citizenship Applications: UK, US, Canada and Australia Guide

Do you need a DNA test for a visa or citizenship application?

Usually not. Immigration authorities ask for DNA evidence only when documents such as birth certificates are missing or doubted. When they do, the test must come from a laboratory accredited for that country and be collected under strict identity checks. London Diagnostics Clinic helps families arrange immigration DNA testing when the sponsor and the applicant live in different countries.

  • It is voluntary. The UK, US and Canada can suggest a DNA test but cannot force you to take one.
  • Each country has its own rules. The UK needs an ISO 17025 lab on the gov.uk approved list, the US needs an AABB-accredited lab, Canada needs an SCC-accredited lab, and Australia needs a NATA-accredited lab.
  • Home kits never count. Samples must be collected by an approved collector, or at an embassy, with photo ID.
  • Start early. Most delays come from booking the overseas collection, not from the laboratory.

Can the Home Office force you to take a DNA test?

No. Home Office guidance says officials cannot require DNA evidence. Applicants may choose to volunteer it, either on their own initiative or after being invited to send more evidence. If you choose not to, no negative conclusion can be drawn from that decision.

This rule followed a 2018 review, after which the Home Secretary apologised because some applicants had been told DNA tests were mandatory for certain family visas when there was no legal basis for this.

In practice, families often choose to provide DNA evidence because it can resolve doubts quickly, especially when:

  • birth certificates were issued late or are hard to verify
  • the Home Office has questioned whether documents are genuine
  • a child born abroad is applying for a British passport through a British parent
  • the relationship is with a sibling, aunt, uncle or grandparent rather than a parent

The US and Canada take the same approach. In Canada, IRCC treats DNA testing as a last resort, offered only when documents are lacking or the claimed relationship is doubted.

Which DNA test does each country accept?

Country

Accepted laboratories

How relatives abroad give samples

How results are sent

United Kingdom (Home Office, HM Passport Office)

ISO/IEC 17025-accredited labs, normally from the gov.uk "Get a DNA test" list

An approved collector acting for the lab witnesses the sample and checks photo ID

Report from the lab, submitted with the application

United States (USCIS, State Department)

AABB-accredited labs only

The lab sends the kit to the US embassy or consulate; a panel physician collects the sample there

The lab sends results directly to the embassy or USCIS

Canada (IRCC)

Standards Council of Canada (SCC)-accredited labs only

After an IRCC "DNA letter", collection abroad usually takes place at the migration office

The lab sends results to IRCC

Australia (Home Affairs)

NATA-accredited labs

Collection by an approved panel physician, as directed by Home Affairs

Report from the lab to the applicant and Home Affairs

The key point: a test that is perfect for one country can be worthless for another. Always check which authority will receive the result before booking.

How does a UK immigration DNA test work when a relative lives abroad?

  1. Check what the Home Office is asking for. Read any letter or request carefully, or ask your solicitor. Decide whether DNA evidence will help.
  2. Choose an approved laboratory. It must be ISO/IEC 17025-accredited, and the easiest check is the list on gov.uk. The Home Office reviews this list each year.
  3. Book the UK sample. The UK sponsor gives a cheek swab to an approved collector, who checks their photo ID.
  4. Book the overseas sample. An approved collector in the applicant's country witnesses the swab, checks official photo ID and records the chain of custody. The Home Office has been applying photo ID rules more strictly.
  5. Laboratory analysis. The samples are compared and a report is issued.
  6. Submit the report. It is sent with the visa or passport application, usually through your solicitor.

All costs, including collection overseas, are paid by the applicant or sponsor. Results from tests that do not meet the accredited standard will carry no weight with the Home Office.

Which DNA test do you need for your case?

Situation

Usual test

Who is tested

Child joining a parent in the UK

Paternity or maternity

Child and parent (adding the other parent improves accuracy)

Child born abroad applying for a British passport

Paternity or maternity

Child and British parent

Parent's documents are missing or doubted

Paternity or maternity

Child and parent

Alleged father has died or is unavailable

Sibling, grandparent or aunt/uncle test

Child and the father's relatives

Brothers or sisters applying together

Sibling test

The siblings, plus parents if available

Child born through surrogacy abroad

Paternity or maternity

Child and intended parent(s)

Testing both parents gives the strongest result. When only one parent is available, a lab that analyses more DNA markers can still give a conclusive answer.

Why London Diagnostics Clinic leads in cross-border immigration DNA testing

  • Leaders in worldwide cross-border testing. Immigration cases nearly always involve two countries. We coordinate the UK sponsor and the relative abroad as one case, including families in Nigeria and across Africa, the Middle East and beyond.
  • The right test for the right authority. We check whether your result is going to the Home Office, USCIS, IRCC or Home Affairs, so you don't pay for a test that won't be accepted.
  • Approved overseas collection for UK cases. Identity checks, witnessed sampling and a documented chain of custody that meet Home Office collection standards.
  • Clear guidance for US, Canadian and Australian cases. For these, the overseas collection is run by the embassy or migration office. We explain each step and connect you with a laboratory accredited for that country.
  • Fast, joined-up communication. One case manager across time zones, with updates for you and your solicitor.
  • Built for the diaspora. With teams in London and Lagos, we understand family migration across borders.

Frequently asked questions

Is a DNA test mandatory for a UK visa? No. The Home Office cannot require DNA evidence, and no negative conclusion can be drawn if you choose not to provide it.

Can I use a home DNA kit for immigration? No. Every country covered here requires collection by an approved collector or at an embassy, with photo ID and chain of custody.

Can a UK-accredited test be used for a US or Canadian application? Not normally. The US accepts only AABB-accredited labs and Canada only SCC-accredited labs. Check which authority will receive the result before you book.

How does my relative abroad give their sample? For UK cases, an approved collector in their country takes the swab and checks their ID. For US and Canadian cases, the sample is usually taken at the embassy or migration office.

What if the father has died or won't take part? A sibling, grandparent or aunt/uncle test can often show the relationship instead.

Will the Home Office share my DNA results? Home Office guidance says DNA results provided to prove or disprove a relationship must not be disclosed outside the Home Office.

How long does an immigration DNA test take? The lab result is usually quick. The overseas appointment is often what takes longest, so start as early as possible.
