Genetic Testing in Dubai: Every Test, Cost & How It Works

Genetic Testing in Dubai: Every Test, Cost & How It Works

What DNA and genetic tests are available in Dubai?

Dubai offers two broad groups of tests. Relationship DNA tests (paternity, maternity, sibling and immigration DNA) check whether people are biologically related. Genetic health and fertility tests (NIPT, carrier screening, embryo testing, karyotyping and sperm DNA tests) look for inherited conditions or fertility problems. London Diagnostics Clinic arranges both for Dubai residents and expats, including cross-border tests when family members live in another country.

  • Relationship DNA uses a simple cheek swab. Legal tests need ID checks and chain of custody; private tests do not.
  • Pregnancy and fertility genetics usually need a blood or semen sample, or embryo cells during IVF.
  • Premarital genetic screening has been mandatory for Emirati couples since January 2025. Expat couples can choose carrier screening.
  • Costs vary by test type, how many people are tested, legal versus private use, and whether samples are collected abroad.

Types of DNA and genetic tests in Dubai at a glance

Test

What it shows

Sample

Who it's for

Paternity / maternity test

Whether a man or woman is a child's biological parent

Cheek swab

Parents seeking certainty, legal or immigration cases

Sibling, grandparent, aunt/uncle test

More distant biological relationships

Cheek swab

When a parent is unavailable or has died

Immigration DNA test

A relationship, to the standard a visa or passport authority requires

Cheek swab, ID-checked

Expats sponsoring family for the UK, US, Canada and others

Prenatal paternity test

Paternity during pregnancy, from 7 weeks

Mother's blood + father's swab

Married couples and surrogacy cases

NIPT (non-invasive prenatal testing)

Baby's risk of chromosome conditions such as Down syndrome

Mother's blood

Pregnant women from about 10 weeks

Carrier screening

Whether a couple carry the same recessive gene changes

Blood or saliva

Couples before marriage or pregnancy

Embryo testing (PGT-A, PGT-M, PGT-SR)

Chromosome or single-gene problems in IVF embryos

Embryo biopsy

IVF patients

Karyotype

Missing, extra or rearranged chromosomes

Blood

Infertility, repeated miscarriage

Sperm DNA fragmentation

Relationship DNA tests compare genetic markers between people. The science is the same for every test. What changes is how the samples are collected, and that decides where the result can be used.

UAE law in brief: Federal Decree-Law No. 41 of 2024 recognises DNA evidence in lineage cases, but UAE courts apply strict conditions. DNA cannot overturn lineage already established by a valid marriage or final judgment. For UAE disputes, speak to a UAE family lawyer first; see our UAE paternity claims guide.

Immigration abroad: the receiving country's rules apply. The UK Home Office expects an ISO 17025-accredited lab and approved, ID-checked collection. The US accepts only AABB-accredited labs, and Canada only SCC-accredited labs.

Genetic tests for fertility, marriage and pregnancy in Dubai

Premarital and carrier screening Since January 2025, genetic testing has been a mandatory part of premarital screening for all Emirati citizens. The national panel covers 570 genes linked to more than 840 conditions, and results take about 14 days. In Dubai's programme, at-risk couples are referred to certified genetic counsellors. They may access government-funded IVF with embryo testing through the Al Amal Initiative.

Expat couples are not covered by the mandatory programme but can choose carrier screening privately. This matters for families from regions where recessive conditions such as sickle cell disease and thalassaemia are common, including many African, Middle Eastern and South Asian communities.

NIPT (non-invasive prenatal testing) A blood test from the mother, usually from about 10 weeks, that screens the baby for common chromosome conditions. It is a screening test, so a high-risk result needs confirming with a diagnostic test.

Embryo testing during IVF (PGT)

  • PGT-A checks embryos for the right number of chromosomes.
  • PGT-M checks for a specific inherited condition that runs in the family.
  • PGT-SR checks for structural chromosome rearrangements, such as a balanced translocation found on a karyotype.

Karyotyping A blood test that counts and checks all 46 chromosomes. It is useful after repeated miscarriage, for men with very low or absent sperm, and for women with early ovarian failure.

Sperm DNA fragmentation Measures damage inside sperm that a routine semen analysis cannot see. Male factor plays a part in 40–50% of infertility cases, so this test is often worth considering after failed IVF or miscarriage.

How much does DNA and genetic testing cost in Dubai?

The fee depends mainly on five things:

  • Test type. A simple paternity test costs far less than a carrier screening panel or embryo testing.
  • Number of people tested. Each extra person adds to the fee.
  • Legal or private. Legal tests include ID checks, witnessed collection and chain of custody.
  • Where samples are collected. Collection in a second country adds collection and transport costs.
  • Turnaround. Faster results usually cost more.

Fees are a guide only and exclude consultations, genetic counselling, IVF and embryo testing, visa or legal fees, and embassy panel physician fees.

How does DNA or genetic testing work with us in Dubai?

  1. Tell us what you need to know. We confirm the right test and whether it must be legal-standard.
  2. Book your collection. Samples are taken in Dubai by our licensed collection partner, and in another country if needed.
  3. Give your sample. A cheek swab, blood sample or semen sample, depending on the test. Legal tests include photo ID checks.
  4. Secure transport to an accredited laboratory, accompanied where needed.
  5. Analysis. Turnaround depends on the test: relationship DNA is usually fastest, while carrier screening and karyotyping take longer.
  6. Your report. We explain what it means and connect you to genetic counselling or fertility specialists when needed.

Usual time after the lab receives the sample

Relationship DNA

2-5 working days

Prenatal paternity / NIPT

5-7 working days

Carrier screening

Testing with family abroad

More than most cities, Dubai is home to families whose lives span several countries. A father may be in Dubai, the child in London and the grandparents in Lagos or Mumbai. We coordinate the testing as one case:

  • collection in Dubai and in each other country, to the same standard
  • one chain of custody across borders
  • secure, accompanied transport of time-sensitive samples
  • a single report, with results explained in plain language

Frequently asked questions

How much is a DNA test in Dubai? It depends on the test, how many people are tested and whether it is legal or private. A private paternity test is the lowest-cost option; legal, prenatal and genetic health tests cost more. See the fee table above.

Is genetic testing mandatory before marriage in the UAE? For Emirati citizens, yes. Genetic testing has been part of mandatory premarital screening since January 2025. Expat couples can choose carrier screening voluntarily.

How long do DNA test results take in Dubai? Relationship DNA results are usually the fastest. Carrier screening takes about two weeks, and karyotyping takes longer because cells must be grown first.

Can I do a DNA test in Dubai if the other person is abroad? Yes. We arrange collection in both countries, with one chain of custody.

What is the difference between NIPT and a prenatal paternity test? NIPT screens the baby for chromosome conditions. A prenatal paternity test checks who the father is. Both use the mother's blood.

Is a home DNA kit accepted for immigration or court? No. Official uses need a legal test with ID checks and chain of custody.

Is my genetic information kept confidential? Yes. Results go only to the people tested, or to the doctor, lawyer or authority they authorise.
